I have a foundation review today, and sadly it’s not a rave. I bought the Cover FX Natural Finish Oil Free Foundation from Sephora a few weeks ago. I went in wanting to try a new foundation because I have an obsession with foundation. I have very red, irritated skin from all the acne medication I’ve taken over the years, so I need to calm down the redness whenever I want to face the public and to do that I use foundation. I can go anywhere from a light tinted moisturizer to a heavy full-coverage foundation, depending on my mood and the outing.
At my sisters wedding in December, the MUA used MAC’s Studio Fix foundation on me, and while that looked great at the wedding, I know from using the foundation for years and years and years that it was not the foundation that I wanted to use on a regular basis, so I tried to find one with a similar full coverage but something that would be useful for a non-sister-wedding event. I thought I found the holy grail in the Cover FX foundation but was sadly, sadly disappointed.
I bought the color N30 and got the color G40 as a sample. There are three color ranges in this foundation N (neutral), P (pink), G (golden) based on on the undertones of your natural skin color. The color ranges then have a number system graduating on shade. There are 24 shades to this foundation, which would be good if the formula wasn’t so bad. More on that later. Here are the two shades that I had with N30 on the right and G40 on the left.
Now, when I wore this foundation around Washington DC in the midst of winter, it was amazing. The finish, the texture, the glow, and the coverage, it was everything that I had wanted in a foundation. I had some trouble color-matching but once I found my shade, I was sure that I had found my new favorite full-coverage foundation. That was until I went home to Florida. When in Florida, I thought I would only take my new-found favorite foundation and that it could do no wrong. I was walking around the mall and ran into a friend who happened to need help makeup shopping. That is one of my favorite things to do, so I gladly helped. After glancing into a mirror at one of the many makeup counters I was horrified as to what I saw. No, I do not have a distorted view of what I look like, I just saw horrible, horrible shifting and flaking of the foundation on my face! I had red patches and missing foundation in so many areas, it was embarrassing needless to say.
I normally would not like to bash any makeup product because I am a lover of all things makeup and beauty, but this is one product that I feel strongly about, and obviously not in a good way. Guys, this foundation did not last for two hours in the Florida heat. Washington is not far from Florida in the summer so I knew that this foundation had to go back and it did. With no remorse. I applied this foundation with my favorite Real Techniques Expert Face Brush and while it blended and set for the first half an hour, after that it shifted in the Florida sun. I tried using a few different setting powders afterwards and the result was the same. Sadface.
I wanted to love this foundation and am still on a quest for a good high-coverage, yet natural looking foundation. I know my wants are high, but know that there is a product out there for me! I just have to find it.
I would definitely not recommend this foundation, it did not stand up to the test of the “elements.” In the store and in any dry, crisp environment this would fare well, but for the places I live and visit often, this is definitely a miss. Sorry, Cover FX!
However, here are some foundations that I do love…
- Nars Sheer Glow Foundation – which I’m comically in the color ‘punjab’ (I’m definitely not Punjabi!)
- Illamasqua Skin Base Foundation
- Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation
Which full coverage foundations do you use and love?
